Study Shows Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometers Are #1 Most Recommended By Pediatricians

WATERTOWN, MA, June 25, 2013 – A new study reveals pediatricians recommend Exergen temporal artery thermometers to their patients more often than any other thermometer.  Temporal artery thermometry is the only temperature measurement method with an increase in pediatrician endorsements year on year.  All other thermometry methods, including electronic oral/rectal/axillary, and ear thermometers were less recommended. For the fourth straight year, pediatricians rank temporal artery thermometry as their #1 preferred method.

The new study further shows that 69% of pediatricians who use or recommend Exergen temporal artery thermometers, use and recommend them for all ages, including for infants less than 3 months old.  This percentage for all ages is larger than for ear thermometers and electronic oral/rectal/axillary, which were used or recommended by 34% and 60% respectively for all ages.

“Pediatricians have been embracing temporal artery thermometry not only because of its ease of use, but because of the well established – and mounting – body of scientific evidence supporting its accuracy for all ages, including newborns,” said Dr. Francesco Pompei, CEO of Exergen Corporation. “Through more than 50 clinical studies, physicians have come to trust and rely upon our product to provide accuracy and ease of use and thereby an enhanced physician-patient bond.”

In addition to the data it provided, the study revealed insights through physician comments.  When asked what the strengths of temporal artery thermometry are over other methods, responses included:  “It’s accurate.  It’s easy to use.  It’s fast.  We like to use it in our office.  We recommend it.”

The survey was conducted by Pragmatic Research, Inc. and Exergen assisted in the development. Results from the survey were consistent with previous independent research involving various temperature taking methods in healthcare settings.

Exergen markets two models of the TemporalScanner thermometer: a professional version for doctors’ offices and hospitals, and a consumer model sold in major retailers including Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreen’s, Rite Aid, Costco, Sam’s Club, Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Kroger and BJ’s.  More than one billion temperatures are taken each year with the TemporalScanner. It is used in thousands of hospitals, clinics, and pediatricians’ offices in the country, as well as in millions of homes.  For the third year in a row it is the #1 selling retail thermometer. The Exergen TemporalScanner’s performance is supported by more than 50 peer-reviewed published studies covering all ages from preterm infants to geriatrics and all care areas from hospitals to homes.
