Free Lessons Offered on “Skate for Health Day”

On Saturday, May 12th, skate schools across the country will join Rollerblade(R) in celebrating national Skate for Health Day with certified skating instructors in 18 cities offering free lessons to children, teens, adults and seniors to promote the health benefits of in-line skating. In addition, free equipment will be provided by the instructors for use during the lesson. Rollerblade’s mission is to inspire both the young and young at heart to stay in shape with in-line skating, which is fun, healthy and low-impact. This is particularly important because 64% of the adult population is overweight and 31% of those are obese. Moreover, according to the Center for Disease Control, the number of obese children ages 6-19 has tripled in proportion since 1980. “In-line skating burns just as many calories as running or cycling with half the shock impact on your joints,” states Nick Skally, Marketing Manager for Rollerblade. “As an avid in-line skater, I’m always surprised at how many people don’t realize what a great workout the sport is. It’s a better cardiovascular workout than using a stair-stepping machine,” he adds.
