Strategic Planning For Christmas Tree Grower Goes High Tech

For the past four years, the staff of Yule Tree Farms of Aurora has spent a day of strategic planning working with Oregon-based Family Business Advisers. This year, nine members of the Yule Tree team participated in the day long event.

Facilitated by Family Business Advisers’ president Eugene Wallace, the Yule Tree members utilized a wireless electronic opinion-gathering device. These devices transmitted participants’ responses to questions ranging from what they did right and where they went wrong during the prior year. Watching results as they instantly appeared on the screen kept the session moving briskly while excellent data was collected.

“The best part about these retreats is that we’ve worked with the Yule Tree management for four years, so there is a history and a scorecard that shows how these sessions has motivated change,” said Wallace.

“The Christmas tree industry is comprised of family farms that generally rely on industry statistics of what happened last year,” commented Joe Sharp, president of Yule Tree Farms. “Instead, we look to ourselves, the future and the bottom line as we plan our year. Our focus is where the Christmas tree business is going, not where it’s been. So, these sessions with Family Business Advisers fit our goals exactly.”

Yule Tree Farms has been growing and selling Christmas trees for 40 years. Currently, the company is producing four million trees on 4,000 acres in the fertile Willamette Valley, south of Portland. For more information please visit www.christmastreeoregon.com.

Family Business Advisers counsels family businesses in the Northwest and always uses the latest technology helping family businesses enjoy profitability.

“The key is to act upon these strategies and tactics,” Sharp said in closing.
