Flu Season’s on the Way: Be Prepared

Easy-To-Use Thermometer Will Make Life Easier, Temperature-Taking More Accurate

Flu season will soon be upon us. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu season in the United States usually ranges from November through March, and sometimes lasts into early spring. If you’re one of the thousands of Americans who may become housebound due to a case of the flu or even a severe cold this year, now’s the time to stock up on some of the basics.

One of the most important is a new thermometer—a working, accurate one is a must for every medicine cabinet. A high temperature is one of flu’s earliest indicators and a true aid to your health care provider in discerning whether your illness is a bad cold or the flu. The Exergen Temporal Scanner infrared thermometer, available at Walmart and leading pharmacies nationwide, gauges body temperature in just two seconds by capturing the naturally emitted heat from skin over the temporal artery, which runs across the forehead and is directly connected to the heart via the carotid artery.

“Research proves that this is one of the most accurate ways to test for fever in all ages and it is clearly the least invasive,” says Exergen Corporation President Francesco Pompei, Ph.D., who developed and patented the technology. “It makes taking a child’s temperature as easy as possible, and because it’s larger than a standard glass thermometer and features a digital display window in which the temperature is read, it also provides a better way to take a temperature for adults and senior citizens.”

The affordable Exergen Temporal Scanner infrared thermometer is tested six times for accuracy during manufacture at Exergen’s plant outside of Boston and comes with a one year warranty. It’s also easy to use: Simply depress and hold its soft rubber-coated button and lightly scan across the forehead. A red LED light and soft beep indicate a correct scan. Ergonomically designed of injected molded plastic, the home unit features a high-contrast LCD temperature display, runs on one 9-volt battery (included), and meets and exceeds all regulatory requirements, including FDA, ASTM and UL.

The only thermometer manufactured in the United States, the Exergen Temporal Scanner is also better for the environment, using infrared sensor technology so it contains no mercury (like traditional glass bulb thermometers). And unlike tympanic thermometers, which necessitate clean plastic probe covers with each new use, some Exergen Temporal Scanners do not require probe covers, and some models feature a silver ion antimicrobial head which naturally destroys harmful bacteria, mold, mildew and fungi.

Exergen Corporation is an internationally respected innovator and leading manufacturer of an extensive line of patented infrared thermometers, scanners, sensors and controls used in a wide variety of industrial and medical applications for professional and consumer use. Founded by Francesco Pompei, Ph.D. over two decades ago in Boston, MA, the company continues to lead the way in its field by providing lower cost, highly reliable results and less invasive methods than with any other thermometry techniques.
