Pfister Energy Inc., a developer and installer of renewable energy systems, announced that it has won the contract to construct rooftop solar arrays totaling 1.7 megawatts at five schools in Piscataway.  Construction on four of the schools will begin immediately, with work on Piscataway High School beginning in early 2013.

The first schools undergoing installations are Arbor Intermediate School, Conackamack Middle School, Quibbletown Middle School and Randolphville Elementary.  The largest system (1.1 megawatts) will be installed at Piscataway High School.  Total energy production across all of the schools will generate nearly two million kilowatt hours (kWh) annually and more than 45 million kWh for the systems’ 25-year lifespan.

“This solar initiative helps the district reduce utility costs and allows for more efficient energy consumption,” said Wayne Pfisterer, Pfister Energy president.  “Based on the design, we anticipate the solar installations to reduce the purchase of electricity by 55 percent district-wide.”

The system’s annual production is equivalent to offsetting the carbon output of more than 250 passenger cars.  Over the 25-year lifetime, the project will offset the equivalent of more than three million gallons of consumed gasoline.  The total project cost is estimated at $4.4 million.

Operation and maintenance is included for all five schools for a five-year period, including annual visits and stringent remote monitoring.  Trenton, NJ-based Speizle Group designed the initial plans for the contract that Pfister won.  The project itself will be owned by the Piscataway board of education.  As a secondary project, Pfister will install electrical monitoring systems in eight additional schools to measure energy consumption.

“Piscataway Township Schools has taken a significant step in their utilization of sustainable, renewable energy to create a better learning environment while also reducing operating costs,” remarked Scott Downie, Principal for Speizle Architectural Group, Inc.  “This project will provide significant savings for the schools and benefits to our environment into the future.”
